The Portland Murals
Gallery contains one or more photos of each Portland mural that the former
nonprofit, Metro Murals, identified as community-based. Below each photo is available information
about the mural including: the artist, the location, the neighborhood
association, the year created, the approximate measurements, and approximate
total square footage. In some instances, it was not possible to determine the mural artist.
Mural ID: Each mural
has an ID (e.g., SEC023b).
-
The first
two letters (SE) refer to the mural's location in Portland (in this case, in
the
Southeast). Portland is divided into 5 areas. The Willamette River divides
east and west, and Burnside St. divides north and south. North Portland is included
with northwest Portland in this Gallery. See Portland
Map.
-
The third letter
refers to the type of mural; in the Gallery the murals are all
community-based murals so the letter is always 'C'.
-
The number (023) refers to the mural's listing in
the Gallery; there is no particular
order to the numbers.
-
The lower case letter(s) following the mural ID
indicate the
number of photos of
that mural. For instance, a 'b' means there are at least two photos ('a'
and 'b');
there may or may not be more than two photos.
Note that some murals will have the letter 'x' at the end of the ID and
before the
other letters (e.g., NEC024xd). This indicates that the mural
no longer exists, but we
have at least four photos ('a' to 'd') of it. Lastly, note
North and Northeast are
classified together as NE.
Mural Name: Metro
Murals has taken the liberty to name the murals for which we
cannot find the name given by the original artist(s).
Artist(s): Includes all the artists known
to be involved in the creation of the mural.
Location: The address of the building on
which the mural is painted. Note that
sometimes murals are located on the side or the back of the building.
Neighborhood Association:
Which
of Portland's 95 neighborhood associations the
mural is located in.
Year Created: The
year (or
approximate year) the mural
was created.
